Costs and Sponsorships
The base level fee is $1300 per student. To cover part of the substantial and rising cost of air travel, students from Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia and the Northern Territory are required to pay an additional amount, beyond the base level fee. It may be that students from country New South Wales and Victoria will also need to contribute something towards the cost of their airfare to Canberra, since these costs occasionally even rival that from Perth.
The total cost to students from Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania is $1,550. For students coming from Western Australia and the Northern Territory the cost is $1,750. NMSS subsidises the remaining costs through the support of parents, past students and friends of NMSS, donations from schools of past and present students and from the Larry Blakers Foundation in the ANU. Students are reminded that there are sources of funds to assist them and their parents in raising the contribution involved.
The present annual cost of the NMSS is more than $130,000, an average of $1,750 for each participant. These costs come in the main from travel and accommodation. The school is a valuable national asset but support from traditional sources, government and the private sector, has declined over the years. Now the school is sponsored by the A L Blakers Memorial Fund in The Australian National University and by past and present students and their parents.
The school is an investment in the youth and future of Australia that has spanned thirty-seven years of excellence. This work can continue with the support and goodwill of its past participants. Indeed it is only in financial terms that the future of the NMSS is in doubt.
Tax deductible donations to NMSS can be made by cheque (payable to the Australian National University) and sent to The National Mathematics Summer School , c/- The Centre for Continuing Education, Australian National University, ACT 0200, or by credit card (Mastercard, Visa or Bankcard) by calling (02) 61252982.
